Health: HIV PEP
- HIV PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) is emergency medicine taken after a possible HIV exposure to prevent infection.
- Start PEP immediately, ideally within 2 hours but within no more than 72 hours (3 days) of exposure. After 72 hours, the medicine cannot stop the virus.
- Requires taking a course of tablets for 28 days.
- For people who are HIV-negative or do not know their status.
- Primarily for emergencies like condom breaks, shared needles, or sexual assault.
- Get it at the emergency room, urgent care, or a sexual health clinic right away.
- In some states, pharmacists can also prescribe PEP.
- Highly effective but not 100% effective
- Not for daily use – PEP is only for emergencies. If you expect repeated exposure to HIV, talk to a doctor about PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis).
